Groundhog Day Handprint Craft
Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd every year. This day marks the end of winter in America, and it’s also known as Candlemas Day.
In this fun craft project, your child will learn about groundhogs while making a cute handprint craft! Groundhogs are furry animals with short tails and long noses.
They live in burrows underground where they eat grasses, plants, insects—and sometimes even small animals!
If you see one near your home or garden on Groundhog Day morning (which falls around February 1st) you’ll know he’s predicting six more weeks of winter weather.

You won’t have to wait until Groundhog Day to enjoy this sensory bottle!
This craft is perfect for helping kids learn about the holiday and is simple to make. Your child will need.
A small, plastic container (like a recycled yogurt tub) – make sure it has a tight seal so that you can fill it with liquid later!
A sharp knife or scissors (if you’re using an empty yogurt container) -Be careful! It’s better not to let your child use these tools by themselves until they’re older and more responsible at handling them. If they are too young, have Mom or Dad help out instead.

This craft is a perfect way to teach your child about the groundhog!
First, you’ll want to create a handprint for the face of your groundhog. We’ve used black paint for this step, but you can use whatever color you’d like.
Second, create a small handprint for the belly of your groundhog. Third, create another smaller handprint in red (or whatever color you choose) to go around the top part of his tail and make it look furry!
Fourth and lastly we created two tiny hands on either side of his ears and painted them black with yellow stripes on top!

Gather materials: q-tips, paintbrush, paint (or markers and plain paper), scissors

Craft Stick and Popsicle Stick Groundhogs
What you will need
- Craft sticks and popsicle sticks (you can find both in the craft section of your local dollar store)
- Paint (I used acrylic, but tempera paint works well too)
- Glue for glue gun or school glue stick
How to make Groundhog Day crafts
Paint each craft stick with white acrylic paint. Let it dry completely before moving on to step 2. You could also use watercolors or even finger paints if you want to keep things colorful!
Using the felt tip marker, write “Groundhog” on one end of each of your groundhogs’ bodies using black ink.
Then write “Day” on their backsides using red ink so they’re facing away from us as they’re sitting upright on their hind legs with their tails raised high above them like a flagpole!
Draw eyes and ears onto each one using a black marker and let it dry thoroughly before moving on to step 4! If you’re going for realism here instead of abstract expressionism style artistry then make sure these features aren’t just little dots because those are reserved for cartoons only buddy)
