11 Mardi Gras Mask Craft For Kids

Introduction

It’s Mardi Gras time! If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with the kids, check out this post. It has 11 amazing mask craft ideas that will keep your little ones engaged and excited about celebrating Mardi Gras.

Mardi Gras Mask Craft – Glitter Masks

These glitter masks are easy to make and fun to wear, not to mention they are easy to clean up! All you need is some masking tape and glitter. You can use any color of glitter or even multiple colors. If the child wants a different design than what’s shown here, have them draw it on with crayons first, then apply the tape over the design. The more intricate their designs are, the better!

Mardi Gras Mask Craft – Lace Feather Mask

Feather masks are a great way to add texture and detail to your Mardi Gras mask. This lace feather mask is easy to make and looks great, too!

You will need:

  • feathers (you can use real or fake)
  • lace trim or ribbon
  • glue gun
  • scissors

Mardi Gras Mask Craft – Gold Leaf Feather Mask

Now that you know the basics of Mardi Gras masks, let’s get to making one!

This project uses gold leaf, which is a thin sheet of gold used in art, jewelry and other applications. It can be purchased in sheets or in powder form. If you’d like to see some examples of finished masks made with gold leaf, check out this Pinterest board for some inspiration!

Mardi Gras Mask Craft – Blue Ombre Masquerade Masks

You can use a blue marker to create an ombre effect. Use different colors, like purple, green and yellow all in one mask. It will look like a rainbow. Or you can use two different markers and make the eyes blue and then draw on different colored lipstick for the mouth.

Or you could cut out some shapes from construction paper that are the same color as your markers, like stars or hearts or flowers, and glue them onto the mask with glitter glue! You could even do this with all different kinds of shapes! Then put glitter on top of them too! Also another fun thing is to draw on glitter nail polish overtop with regular pencils so they don’t smear when they sweat (this happened to me before at camp once).

Materials needed:

  • Cardboard, about the size of a standard piece of printer paper. The larger the better; you’ll want to be able to see through your mask to wear it later!
  • Masking tape, just enough for the bottom edge of your mask (you can use double-sided tape if you have some handy)
  • Glitter, any color(s). You’ll need enough glitter for one side of your mask and then some extra for decorating later on. We recommend using small granules rather than large chunks—they will stick better! Feel free to make this DIY Mardi Gras activity different colors by using different shades/types of glitter.
  • Glue—We recommend PVA glue but Elmer’s also works well here! If you want something more permanent (and harder), try modge podge instead 🙂
