11 Christmas Tree Decoration Craft For Kids

Christmas is a magical time of year, and one of the most magical parts is decorating the Christmas tree with ornaments that you’ve made with your kids.

Decorating the tree is also a great way to get your children into crafting. There are so many fun things you can make for your Christmas tree this year.

Here are some ideas for easy projects that will add some sparkle to your holiday décor:

Pipe Cleaner Ornaments

You can use pipe cleaners to make a variety of ornaments. Pipe cleaners are easy-to-find, inexpensive, and fun to work with.

Let your kids make their own unique ornaments by following these steps, Choose the colors of pipe cleaners you want to use for each ornament.

Cut the pipe cleaner in half lengthwise to make two pieces approximately 3 inches long. Do not cut all the way through but leave about 1/4 inch uncut at one end of each piece so that they are still connected at one end when folded over on themselves where they meet at an angle (see photo).

Paper Snowflakes

These paper snowflakes are a great way to keep the kids occupied, and they’re also perfect for hanging on the tree.

You can make them in lots of different shapes, but here we’re going to focus on the traditional six-pointed star shape that everyone knows and loves.

How do you make a paper snowflake? It’s easy. first, fold your piece of paper in half diagonally, then again horizontally.

Next cut out a triangle shape (it doesn’t have to be perfect!) at each end of the folded edge, then unfold it into a flat sheet once more.

Finally, glue or tape together two opposite corners so that you have four triangles sticking out from your original square shape – these will become part of your final snowflake design!

Popsicle Stick Ornaments

Materials

  • Paint in different colors (red, blue, yellow)
  • Paintbrushes

Popsicle sticks (preferably untreated) or wooden craft sticks of your choice. Make sure they are all the same size so that they can fit into one another when stacked. They also need to be thin enough so that you can carve out a hole for the string to go through easily.

Pom Pom Garland

A pom garland is a great way to decorate your Christmas tree.

They’re straightforward to make, and children will have fun creating them! You can use different materials to create different textures and sizes of pom poms.

Button Ornaments

You will need.

  • buttons in various colors and sizes
  • hot glue gun
  • ribbon, cut into 5-inch (13 cm) lengths

Glue the buttons to each other in a variety of colors and sizes. The more colorful, the better! If you have any larger buttons, glue them at different heights on your ornament so it looks like a tree with different branches.

To hang your button ornaments, thread a length of ribbon through the top of one button, around another button, and back through itself; repeat on the opposite side of the first ribbon piece until you have 4 pieces going up from the bottom of the ornament (see photo).

Tie all 4 pieces together at the top with another piece of ribbon for the hanging loop; trim loose ends if necessary.

Felt Ornaments With Stuffing

Felt is a great material to work with for kids because it’s easy to cut, sew, glue, paint, and stuff.

And once your creation is complete you can hang it on the tree or proudly display it on a shelf for years to come.

If you don’t have time to make an ornament from scratch then pick up some pre-made shapes from your local craft store! You’ll find everything from snowflakes to hearts and stars in all sizes and colors.

Cardboard Animal Ornaments

You can use any animal you want. You can use any color. You can use any size.

You can use any type of cardboard, including cereal boxes, paper towel tubes, and even leftover Christmas cards!

The only requirement is that the cardboard must be sturdy enough to hold its shape after shaping it with your hands (or with a little help from some masking tape).

You’ll need.

  • Cardboard cutouts in the shape of an animal (or several animals)
  • Paint or markers for decorating the animals’ faces and bodies
  • Glue for attaching ribbons or bells to the animals’ tails

Birdseed Ornaments

Making birdseed ornaments is a great, simple project for kids of all ages.

There are many different types of bird seed you can use, but the most popular include sunflower seed, millet, and cracked corn. You can also mix seeds together to create your own blend!

To hang them on the tree once they are finished, simply make a hole in the top using a sharp tool such as an awl or needle (you could also use a nail if you don’t have any tools). Thread some twine through and tie knots at both ends so that it won’t slip out while hanging on the tree.

Tissue Paper Garland And Star

Materials

  • a box of tissue paper (the kind you would use to wrap gifts)
  • a hole punch (or another small tool to make holes in the tissue paper)
  • string, ribbon, or yarn

Instructions

Punch holes into the tissue paper with your hole punch tool.

Cut star shapes from the remaining tissue paper and tie them onto the strings/ribbon/yarn with knots or bows at both ends. Hang up on your Christmas tree!

Handprint And Footprint Ornaments

You will need.

Paintbrush. Paint in one color of your choice for the handprint or footprint. You’ll also want to get some black paint to outline your handprint or footprint if you want it to look more like a snowflake. If you want, you can do both the handprint and print ornament at the same time!

On a canvas (or any surface), lay down newspaper so that the paint doesn’t spill onto other areas of your home as they dry overnight. Put on some music while you work—this craft takes time and it’s good to have something else diverting you while waiting for them all to dry!

Coffee Filter Angel Ornament

This is a fun project to do with the kids because it’s so easy and inexpensive. You’ll need coffee filters, paint (or markers), glitter, ornaments, whatever you like.

To make your angel ornament.

  • Paint the coffee filter with different colors of paint for a stained glass effect. You can use different shades of one color or mix up all kinds of colors if you’d like!
  • Add glitter or other items to decorate your ornament if desired.
  • Let dry completely before hanging on the tree or wall!
