Mexican Craft For Kids

Mexican Craft For Kids

The Mexican holiday Cinco De Mayo is a great time to celebrate

Mexican culture with your kids! Here are some fun and educational crafts that you can do with them.

Make A Paper Plate Sombrero

For this project, you’ll need.

  • A paper plate (one that’s a little bigger than your head)
  • A hole punch
  • A strip of paper (preferably tissue paper)

To make the sombrero, cut a circle out of the middle of your plate using a pair of scissors or an x-acto knife.

If you have access to one, use the hole punch to make a hole in the center of the circle and then tie around it with string. You can decorate your hat with markers or paint.

Create a pinata.

Make A Pinwheel.

For this project, you’ll need

  • A paper plate (if you want to be extra crafty, you can decorate a plain one)
  • A glue stick
  • Scissors
  • A feather from a craft store or pet store

Make A Tissue Paper Flower.

Tissue paper is a fun material to work with because it’s so soft and in every color imaginable! It can also be used to make lots of things.

One of the most popular crafts is making tissue paper flowers. They’re easy to make, and they look great as decorations or gifts (you can even use them in your hair).

To make a tissue paper flower, you’ll need.

  • Tissue paper (the thinner the better)
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Color in A Mayan Mask.

You will need

  • a large piece of paper or cardboard
  • colored pencils, markers, or crayons (as many colors as you like)
  • a ruler and scissors if you are using paper or cardboard

Instructions: Color in a Mayan mask. You can either draw a mask on your own, cut out one from an old calendar or magazine, and color in the empty spaces between its eyes and nose, or use this template to make your own mask.

Once you have finished coloring in your mask, cut out two small holes for eyes, and then add another hole inside each eye to make room for a ribbon or string to hold it up. If you want extra decoration like feathers on the side of the mask, give those detail work after it has been colored in too!

Make Paper Flowers For Your Hair

Making flower hair accessories is a fun activity for kids of all ages. This craft can be made with many different types of tissue paper, but tissue paper that comes in sheets or strips is the easiest to work with.

Cut flowers from tissue paper using a template (or make your own). Beginners can use an oval shape, while more experienced crafters should try to make petal shapes as close to natural flower shapes as possible.

Use pencils or toothpicks to create stems on each flower. For large flowers like daisies, you will need several ‘petals’ per stem; for small flowers such as violets and forget-me-nots, only one is needed per stem.

If you are making a crown out of these flowers then it may take quite a few!

Color In Mexican Artwork To Decorate Their Room.

Color in Mexican artwork to decorate their room. You can find a lot of Mexican artwork online, or if you’re lucky enough to be near Mexico, there are many markets that sell handmade pieces.

You could also try creating your own!

The key to being successful at this craft is learning the symbols and themes behind the art. Once you understand these elements, it’s easy to start coloring in any piece of Mexican art with your own color scheme in mind.

For example, if you see a picture of a flower or animal that looks like one used by Aztecs thousands of years ago, look up what meaning those symbols had in their culture then draw it yourself with new colors!

Make A Paper Headdress Like The Aztecs Used To Wear

Use a template to draw your headdress on a piece of paper.

Glue the paper to another piece of scrap paper, then cut around the headdress shape with scissors;

Use a hole punch to make holes along each edge of the headpiece and decorate it with markers;

Tie it on your head with ribbon or string!

Conclusion

We hope that you and your kids have enjoyed this foray into Mexican art! We’ve only covered a few of the many ways that Mexicans have expressed themselves through art and craft over the years, but we hope we’ve given you some ideas for fun projects to do with your kids. If anything, our takeaway is clear: craft is a great way to teach children about different cultures, even if it’s just by having them color in pictures!
